Acropolis

We visited the Acropolis today , there were 7 of us with a private guide. It was a 15 minute walk from our hotel. I was a bit apprehensive about drowning in a sea of tourists but was pleasantly surprised at the lack of crowds. Apparently we missed a cruise ship day when the site is wall to wall people. The Acropolis is a 8 acre site with several ruins, the best known of course , the Parthenon. They  have spent 35 years putting back together the pieces strewn about the site, the result of wars and old age. The buildings elegance, beauty, and grandeur are striking. The British stripped most of the statues and carved facade which sit in London. The remains are still breathtaking and beautiful . The hilltop site offers stunning views of Athens and the distant Mediterranean Sea. I was very impressed. Our guide was a local historian, she added a human side to the ancient story.
